Vehicle Lockout Service

Car Lockout Service in Utah

You roll your eyes when your significant other does it. You’re annoyed when your teenage kids do it. But now you’ve gone ahead and locked your keys in your car, and boy are you mad! If you’re at the grocery store or the mall, it’s bad enough, but if you happen to be in a remote location on one of Utah’s beautiful roadways, you’re probably swearing under your breath—or maybe louder than that!

If you have a car with a transponder key, the car typically won’t let you lock it inside—although we’ve occasionally been called out when these keys are accidentally locked in the trunk, just outside the sensor range. If your car is controllable by app, you’re in the clear. If not, you’re going to need to be creative to get inside the vehicle, and, ultimately, you may need to call us for car lockout service.

With help from Roadside Rescue, there’s no reason to let frustration get the best of you when you’re locked outside your vehicle in Ogden, Bountiful, Layton, Centerville, or any of Salt Lake City’s northern suburbs. Roadside Rescue is local, and we’re ready and waiting for your call.

We know that locking your keys in your car is annoying and even dangerous depending on your location, and we’re here to get you inside your vehicle and back on the road when it matters most.

Do I Really Need to Call for Professional Car Lockout Service—Or Can I DIY It?

Your first question when you lock your keys in your car is whether or not you’ll be able to retrieve them yourself. Getting into a locked car door with nothing but a shoelace or a bobby pin is the stuff of unrealistic movie scenes. Besides, who carries bobby pins around anyway? You may be tempted to file some of the methods below under “it can’t hurt to try,” which is probably the wise thing to do. Here are just a few problems with these old familiar methods.

The coat hanger method: This one worked well in the ‘70s and ‘80s when vertical push buttons were common lock mechanisms. But even if you have a car that still uses this type of door lock system, you’re better off calling us for help. Trying to wedge a coat hanger in between the window and the weather stripping is very likely to cause damage to your car’s paint job or damage the rubber sealing that insulates the interior of your car from both weather and noise. Even if you get into your car, is it worth it to risk hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of damage? Our services are priced so you don’t need to take that risk.

The shoelace method: You may be able to find evidence of this urban legend working in the vast recesses of the internet, but we’re professionals, and we’ve never been able to pull this one off. And depending on where you are when you’re locked out, this method of getting into your locked car could be downright dangerous. What better way to announce to whoever is in your vicinity that you’re in the vulnerable position of being locked out of your car? This could be just the signal that a thief or other predator needs in order to convince him/her that you’re a good target. Of course, if you’re stuck on the highway, the last thing you want to do is to expose yourself to other vehicles traveling at high speeds. Stay safe and leave the vehicle lockout service to us.

Use a wedge: An inflatable or curved wedge is a standard tool in an automotive toolkit. If you have one, the idea is to pry out the top of the door frame and use the wedge to keep it there so you can reach inside with another tool to access the unlock button. You may need special training, however, to use this method without damaging the paint or the weather stripping in the process, not to mention the realignment job that may be necessary if you don’t know how to pry the door out carefully. Once again, skip the risk of damage and leave the unlocking to the pros.

Emergency police service: This remedy is only relevant if you’re in an emergency situation. If your pet or child is locked in the car, call 911. The police will arrive quickly, but they’ll break the window and leave you to pay for it. It goes without saying that this fix is for true emergencies only.

Calling Roadside Rescue for Vehicle Lockout Service on Utah’s Roadways

You’ve done your best to get into the locked vehicle, but you’re resigned to the fact that it’s not going to happen. No problem! Give us a call and we’ll be on the way in short order.

Our friendly dispatcher will ask you for as much information as possible so that your driver will arrive prepared to get you back into your car quickly. We’ll ask you the following questions:

  • Where are you? If you’re not at home, give us as much information as possible about your location. Many stores have multiple locations, so be specific. If you’re on the side of the road, check for mile markers or let us know the last sign you passed if you can recall it.
  • The make and model of your vehicle. We’ll make sure to bring the best equipment to get into your specific vehicle.
  • What’s the position of your vehicle? Will we be able to easily gain access to your car and one of the doors? Are you in a crowded area?

We know you’re eager to get back into your car and to get on with your day, so we’ll give you an accurate estimate of our arrival time. If you’re stuck on the side of the road, it is important for you to stay with your vehicle at all times. In Utah, abandoned vehicles on the freeway may be removed after four hours. Hang tight and we’ll be there shortly.

Prevent the Need for Car Lockout Service by Planning Ahead

A little bit of planning can give you easy access to a backup key when you accidentally lock your keys in the car.

Spare keys: Protect yourself from annoying lockout delays by giving a spare key to a roommate or domestic partner. If you live alone, keep your car’s spare key on a separate keychain that stays in the house in case of emergency. Believe it or not, we have occasionally been called for vehicle lockout service because the customer keeps the spare on his or her regular key ring!

Magnetic key vault: A magnetic key vault attaches to the underside of the car and has a combination lock or other safety feature so that only you can access it. If you are forgetful and have gotten into repeated trouble with locking yourself out of your car, try this solution.

Still, even our best prepared clients can get locked out of their own car. If this happens to you, choose Roadside Rescue for quick and affordable locksmith services.
